Some aspects of the chemical safety of environmental water bodies: Criteria for classifying chemicals as hazardous to aquatic ecosystems

Abstract

The factors that have the greatest negative impact on aquatic ecosystems have been analyzed. The role of processes involving oxygen reduction intermediates in the formation of the biological integrity of a natural aquatic environment and the role of water-soluble reduced sulfur compounds in the formation of the toxic properties thereof has been substantiated. Integrated water quality indicators for surface water bodies have been proposed. Criteria for classifying chemicals as “environmentally hazardous” have been developed with respect to substances whose penetration into surface water bodies should be excluded or subject to strict control.
