Abstract
The results of a biostratigraphic and lithological study of the terrigenous Lower Carboniferous Urmugteyul Formation in the stratotype area (the left bank of the Sharyn-Gol River, Orkhon Trough) are reported. The formation includes four members: the first three are assinged to the Lower Urmugteyul Subformation; the fourth, to the Upper Urmugteyul Subformation. The palynological studies allowed us to limit the period of accumulation of the Lower Urmugteyul Subformation by the Late Tournaisian, and the Upper Urmugteyul Subformation, by the Late Visean. The nature of the structure and lithological features of the section considered as part of two terrigenous facies associations, as well as the paleontological characteristics and analysis of palynofacies, indicate that the accumulation of the Lower Urmugteyul Subformation occurred in the setting of the alluvial–deltaic plain, while the Upper Urmugteyul Subformation was formed in the shallow-water part of the shelf.
