Abstract

A series of 2-aryl-5-{2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]ethenyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazoles were synthesized by cyclization of 3-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]acrylic acid with substituted benzohydrazides in the presence of phosphoryl chloride. The synthesized compounds were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectroscopic techniques and screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. pyogenes, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, C. albicans, and A. niger. Most of the synthesized 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives exhibited moderate to good activity against the tested microbial strains.
