Influence of soapstock preparation conditions and initiator amount on the colloid-chemical properties of polystyrene latex

Abstract

Emulsifiers were prepared by base saponification of sunflower-seed oil production waste, soapstock. The rate of styrene polymerization in the presence of these surfactants and various amounts of an initiator (potassium persulfate) was estimated. The polystyrene yield and molecular weight were found. For six latexes synthesized, the colloid-chemical characteristics (dry residue, surface tension, electrokinetic potential, rapid coagulation threshold, latex globule size) were determined.
