Abstract
Daphnia longispina and other large cladocerans are active filterers, consuming algae and other suspended matter. Undigested particles sink to the bottom and are further involved in the biotic cycle. The absence of planktivorous fish favors the development of large zooplanktonic species showing high filtration activity. Owing to filtration activity, zooplankton can clarify water masses.
