Abstract

Condensation of aldehydes of the vanillin series (vanillin, vanillal, and ethers and esters derived therefrom) with biphenyl-2-amine in anhydrous methanol gave the corresponding Schiff bases which were reduced with Na[BH(OAc)3] in benzene under mild conditions to obtain N-[3-alkoxy-4-(hydroxy-, alkoxy-, or acyloxy)phenylmethyl]biphenyl-2-amines.
