Abstract
The paper analyzes problems involved in the impedance description of the electromagnetic field at the surface of an absorbing (reactive) medium. A new scheme based on the use of the scalar equations of a scattering surface is proposed for magnetotelluric data inversion. The basic information in this approach is the distribution of imaginary vectors on the surface that are generated by the exact vector impedance boundary condition.
