Concentration and Determination of Uranium(VI) by a Sorbent Containing Fragments of p-Aminobenzoic Acid

Abstract

The sorption and complexing properties of a modified sorbent based on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with methacrylic acid with respect to uranium(VI) was studied, and the basic parameters of metal sorption were determined. The main attention was paid to studying the influence of medium pH, contact time (1–250 min), ionic strength (0–1.4), and metal concentration in solution on uranium sorption. The maximum degree of separation of uranium(VI) by the sorbent is achieved from solutions with pH 4. Sorption equilibrium is reached after 3 h. With an increase in the ionic strength of the solution above 0.6, metal sorption significantly decreased. As the concentration of uranium(VI) in the solution raises, its sorption increases and reaches a maximum at a concentration of 8 × 10–3 M: the static capacity is 539 mg/g. The conditions for uranium(VI) desorption by various mineral acids (HClO4, H2SO4, HNO3, HCl) after concentration on the proposed sorbent are determined. Uranium(VI) is quantitatively desorbed with 2 M HCl. The degree of uranium(VI) separation under optimal conditions exceeds 95%.
