Abstract

The refinement of the vertical profile of methane concentration in the Earth atmosphere is simulated in the absence of direct visibility on the spacecraft–surface path. For simulation, the vertical profile of methane concentration is approximated using the sixth-degree polynomial, and the profile is refined with the aid of variation in its coefficients to reach agreement with the experimental data. Experimental data on methane sounding from the Earth surface are presented, when the application of the method is limited or incompletely reliable. It is recommended to employ transceiver scanning that provides beam fixing at a given point when the satellite passes along an orbit trajectory to increase the resolution of the lidar in selected areas on the Earth surface.
