Abstract

The reason for the shortening of microwave pulses of the low-efficiency relativistic oscillators in which the space-charge electric field of the high-current electron beam in the generating section suppresses the autoelectron emission from the wall with the subsequent microwave discharge is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the creation of plasma that suppresses the microwave generation is related to the relativistic-electron bombardment of the surface. The electron-beam energy incident on a surface fragment that is needed for the shortening of the microwave pulse is estimated to be 10−3 J/cm2.
