Ion acceleration in plasma injected into spatiotemporally modulated supercritical relativistic electron beam

Abstract

We have experimentally studied the acceleration of injected plasma ions in the collective fields of a virtual cathode and a space-charge wave of a high-current relativistic electron beam modulated in time and space. The temporal modulation is produced by the field of the virtual cathode that exhibited low-frequency relaxation in the presence of plasma, while the spatial modulation was provided by a spatially-periodic magnetic field.
