Abstract

The phenomenon of thermocapillary trapping of gas bubbles by a laser beam in a layer of absorbing liquid confined between two plates is demonstrated. In this system, the laser beam is capable of trapping gas bubbles occurring at a distance of up to ten beam diameters. Acceleration of a trapped bubble was observed, and the bubble velocity was determined as a function of the distance to the beam projection on the layer plane. The force developed by a thermocapillary trap exceeds 10 nN.
