Abstract
The problem of compensation of the initial energy spread of ions by multigap reflectors of time-of-flight mass spectrometers with grids has been considered. Cases of catastrophes A4, A5, A6, and A7 for the simplest variant of potential distribution are considered. It is shown that multigap reflectors, the time-of-flight function of which is described by the catastrophes A4, A5, A6, and A7, compensate for much larger energy spreads of ions in comparison with the catastrophes A2 and A3. The results obtained can be used to design gridless mass spectrometers that compensate for large initial energy spreads of ions.
