Abstract

The recently discovered phenomenon of drag anomaly (early crisis) observed for droplets in a two-phase turbulent flow at transition Reynolds numbers (Re = 10–100) is experimentally supported in the case of a gas flow about a single hard sphere as well. Using a specially designed torsion balance, the drag force of a foam plastic sphere 3 mm in diameter placed in a blower-produced turbulent jet is measured. It is found that the turbulence of the flow about the sphere must be high for the drag anomaly to arise.
