Abstract
Initiation of a volume discharge in the gaseous mixture of CO2 lasers at above-atmospheric pressures for a discharge gap 5 cm long is considered. It is shown that preionization by soft X rays allows initiation of the volume discharge when ratio E/p (p = 5 atm) is below a static breakdown value.
