Abstract

A theoretical description of the formation of hydrodynamic flows in narrow liquid-crystal channels with free surface under laser irradiation was proposed. Within the nonlinear generalization of the classical Ericksen-Leslie theory, the thermomechanical contributions to both the stress tensor and viscous moment per unit volume of the liquid-crystal phase were taken into account, which allowed the description of some features in the formation of a flow in nematics formed by 4-n-pentyl-4′- and 4-n-octyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl molecules.
