Abstract

The formulas of the crystal-field theory have been adapted to a system with the symmetry group C 3v. A simple method has been proposed for including the polarization of the local environment of the Cr3+ impurity ion in LiNbO3. A model dependent on one parameter has been proposed for a distortion of the niobium octahedron due to the incorporation of the trivalent chromium ion. This parameter has been determined from experimental data. The parameters of the intraionic and interionic interactions have been obtained for the Cr3+ ion in the lithium and niobium positions of the crystal lattice of lithium niobate.
