Abstract

A phenomenological theory (suggested by one of the authors of this study) in which the change caused by a phase transition in the fully symmetric part of the probability density of the charge distribution is taken into account without involving perturbation theory is applied to the description of the phase transition in TeO2., The fourth-order rigidity constants in the basal plane of a tetragonal crystal at p = 1 bar and T = 293 K are determined by comparing theory and experiment. Within the accuracy of the experiment, the pressure dependences of the lattice parameters and the soft-mode frequency predicted from the theory developed agree well with the known data.
