Development of the Photonuclear Method for Detection of Hidden (N; C) Concentrations with Registration of Induced (12N; 12B) Activities

Abstract

An overview of the studies devoted to the development of the photonuclear method of external detection of hidden explosives and narcotic drugs using the registration of induced activities of the short-lived radioisotopes 12N and 12B is presented. The main aspects of this method are considered: the involved nuclear reactions; emission of γ-quanta, electrons, and positrons from irradiated objects upon (12N; 12B) decays; radiation safety problems; detectors for registration of (12N; 12B) activities at pulsed electron accelerators; and model descriptions of the attempts to implement the method.
