Measurement of the formation heights of UV and EUV emission above sunspot umbrae from observations of three-minute oscillations

Abstract

The results of SDO/AIA observations of 3 minute oscillations above sunspot umbrae at wavelengths of 1700, 1600, 304, 171, and 193 Å are presented, and used to estimate the formation heights for this emission. This was done by measuring the delay of the wave’s propagation from one emission layer to another, assuming that the wave propagated at the sound speed. The results obtained are compared with two different models for the atmosphere of a sunspot umbra.
