Abstract

The question of liquid rise in ultrafine capillaries is discussed. It is shown that two well-known approaches to the calculation of the height of liquid rise yield different results for surfaces on which liquid spreading takes place. The reason for the difference is analyzed, and it is noted that surface forces acting in thin films are of importance for calculating the height of liquid rise. It is demonstrated that the height of liquid rise may differ significantly from the value predicted by the Jurin formula.
