Abstract

A method for focusing and scanning a beam of Lamb waves emitted by a point source in a cylinder wall is proposed. The transmitter is excited with a sequence of pulses, so that the wave from the last pulse of this sequence and the waves from the previous pulses, which have passed around the cylinder several times, simultaneously arrive at the point under study. Hence, the waves are focused and the probe is equivalent to a kind of virtual grating. The focal spot is stretched in the direction of the “center of gravity” of this grating.
