Abstract
A method for nondestructive testing of the completeness of hardening of local areas of stamped forged pieces from 5XHM steel is described. The physical essence of this method is based on the determination of the phase composition of a hardened forged piece from the density of 5XHM steel, which is measured via detection of backscattered radiation of the 137Cs radionuclide. The portability of the detecting devices with an independent 12-V supply voltage permits inspection of various regions of a large-size forged piece. The phase composition in a single region of a forged piece is determined within 2–3 s. The applicability of a prompt analysis under industrial conditions makes it possible to select the time interval for which a forged piece is heated during hardening. Biological shields of radioisotope probes ensure a decrease in the radiation intensity to a tolerable level.
