Study through Diverse Synthesis Methods of Chromium Nitride Thin Layers: a Review

  • Published:
Journal of Surface Investigation: X-ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

Tribological properties, including wear resistance, scratch resistivity, corrosion resistance and surface hardness, play an important role in determining service life. This study aims to introduce chromium nitride layers as an important member of transition metal nitride coatings to improve tribological properties. Various synthesis methods are discussed, including phase vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition, and hybrid methods (electroplating and nitriding). Finally, methods for improving the achieved properties of the chromium nitride layer are described and the future applications of these thin layers are discussed.
