Abstract

The cascade multiplication of atoms in a solid target is considered theoretically for different types of scattering cross section. The solution of the transport equation in some cases is found in an analytical form, in others it is reduced to numerical integration. Formulas are obtained for the energy distribution and the total number of cascade atoms, as well as for the total cascade energy as functions of the target depth and the type of atomic interaction. The theoretical results generalize the Landau–Rumer theory of cascade showers to the case of arbitrary types of atomic potentials, from the hard-sphere potential to the Coulomb potential.
