Applicability of the Kerr effect in remote sensing of thunderstorm electric fields

Today, the strengths of electric fields over thunderstorm clouds and their spatiotemporal structure are measured with the use of either sensing balloons or drones. Such techniques are inefficient and quite expensive. At the same time, the parameters of these electric fields are of great importance for geophysics. In this work, we consider the possibility of using the Kerr effect in the remote sensing of electric fields.
