Residual phase distortions in correction with laser guide star

Abstract

At present, the laser guide star technique has already found rather wide applications in correcting atmospheric distortions for astronomical systems. As a rule, the laser guide star is formed by focusing the laser radiation from the Earth; its angular position undergoes random fluctuations and, therefore, it cannot be used for correcting the total tilt of the wavefront. The question of the effect of the guide star position on the characteristics of higher aberrations of phase fluctuations remained open. The effect of fluctuations of the laser guide star position on residual distortions in correcting higher mode components of phase fluctuations is considered in the approximation of the Huygens-Fresnel method. It is shown that the ratio of the aperture diameter of the optical system (telescope) to the root-mean-square value of the position of the center of gravity of the focused laser beam is a key parameter of the problem.
