The 557.7 and 630-nm atomic oxygen midlatitude airglow variations associated with geomagnetic activity

Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the midlatitude airglow response to weak and moderate geomagnetic storms. Experimental data of the 557.7 and 630 nm airglow received at Eastern Siberia (52°N, 103°E) in 1997–2009 are used for the analysis. Simultaneous disturbances of variations in the considered emissions were observed during some geomagnetic storms. Features of the observed emission disturbances, their probable sources, and correlation with magnetosphere-ionosphere structures are discussed.
