Distributions of the lidar-signal intensity with the scattering volume image spot are analyzed. The contributions by the single- and double-scattering components to the lidar return, as well as the effective droplet size in clouds are estimated. It is shown that in the case of multiple scattering, the lidar return intensity distributions can be described by a sum of the Gaussian components corresponding to single and multiple scattering.
