Oxygen electroreduction in propylene carbonate solutions

Abstract

The reaction of oxygen electroreduction is studied on various catalytically active materials: compact and disperse platinum, gold, and carbon in a nonaqueous solvent (propylene carbonate). In aqueous media at medium and low pH, the platinum activity is known to far exceed the activities of gold and carbon due to the high adsorption properties of platinum. It is shown that in the nonaqueous solvent medium, in the high current region, platinum demonstrates the activity lower as compared with Au and C. This is associated with the combined effect of the surface passivation by the products of solvent reaction with oxygen reduction products and the surface blockage with a film formed by oxygen-containing compounds of alkali metals.
