Abstract

The electric double layer structure is studied on a dropping liquid Cd-Ga electrode (0.3 at % Cd) in a solvent with a high donor number (DN), namely, in hexamethylphosphorotriamide (HMPTA, DN = 38.8). A very strong chemisorption interaction of this electrode with HMPTA molecules is registered. The chemisorption potential drop in HMPTA on Cd-Ga electrode is found to be comparable with similar values observed earlier in various solvents on catalytically active metals of platinum subgroup. The data obtained on the Cd-Ga electrode are compared with the corresponding data on Hg, Ga, and In-Ga electrodes. It is shown that the chemisorption interaction energy of studied electrodes in HMPTA grows in the following series: Hg < In-Ga < Cd-Ga < Ga. The same as on In-Ga and Ga electrodes, the chemisorption potential drop on the Cd-Ga electrode increases in a series of solvents with the increase in the solvent DN. Hence, this dependence has a general character. The whole set of obtained results confirms the concept of the donor-acceptor nature of the metal-solvent specific interaction at which the solvent molecules chemisorbed at the electrode surface donate an electron pair to the metal.
