Abstract
The results of research are presented on new runoff and waste water treatment technologies based on the use of reverse osmosis (RO) systems equipped with specially designed open-channel membrane devices for treating water with a high suspended matter content. A characteristic feature of the technology is the utilization of the RO concentrate, which is discharged from the system together with the wet sludge and all contaminants rejected from water. The dependences of the concentration of pollutants in the filtrate and the membrane performance on the salinity of feed water and its volume concentration factor in the RO unit have been shown. The parameters of units operating with these types of wastewater have been determined. The effect of feed water salinity on the petrochemicals and detergents rejection efficiencies has been studied. A settleability prediction procedure, based on determination of the rate of membrane fouling with suspended solids as a function of their particle size, has been proposed to calculate the settling efficiency of flush water after hydraulic washing of membrane devices.
