Abstract
A sequence of large earthquakes occurred around the Urup I., Kurils, Russia from July 2012 through June 2013. This swarm of earthquakes with magnitudes as high as 6.1 was followed by a deeper and larger event (magnitude 6.9). The present study is concerned with the determination and analysis of earthquake parameters and focal mechanisms for the larger events in the sequence. It is the first time for the Kuril–Sea-of-Okhotsk region, and in the practice of seismological observation on Sakhalin Island, that mass determination of the seismic-moment tensor has been carried out for regional earthquakes. A model is proposed to evaluate the causes of complicated seismicity behavior in the region based on the data supplied by these seismic events. It was shown that this earthquake sequence is in some aspects similar to the well-known Simushir earthquake doublet of 2006–2007.
