Abstract
The relationships of quantitative clinical, EEG, and neuroimmunological parameters were analyzed in 40 female adolescent patients with depressive conditions and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI) before starting a course of therapy in order to clarify the role of neuro-immune interactions in the pathogenesis of NSSI. The findings confirmed that neuroinflammation processes are involved in the pathogenesis of depression and NSSI and influence the EEG parameters. The structure of clinical–neurobiological correlations revealed in the study indicates that neuroinflammation processes in depressive patients with NSSI are relatively mild or compensated for by anti-inflammatory mechanisms and are accompanied by more subtle rearrangements of the EEG frequency structure and topography, in contrast to macroinflammation observed in encephalitis and meningitis and associated with an increase in slow-wave EEG activity. The results clarify the neurobiological factors of the pathogenesis of non-suicidal autoaggressive behavior in depressive adolescent patients.
