A search for supernovae preceding short gamma-ray bursts

Abstract

We have found the probability of double events “supernova—gamma-ray burst” (GRB) separated by a time interval of a few years. Their sources can be supernova explosions in binary systems accompanied by formation of a short-lived pair of compact objects which produce a short GRB while merging. Each of the ∼500 short SGBs must have an optical precursor, a supernova at a time interval of < 2 years. We discuss the possible relationship between SN 1997ds and GRB 990425.
