The Contribution of Summer Warming to Anomalies of Water Abundance in the Northern Dvina over the Last Century

Abstract

Temperature extremes and droughts in the Northern Dvina basin are considered along with their contribution to the formation of low-water phases from the period of early 20th century warming (ETCW) to the warming in the early XXI century. The results obtained suggest the conclusion that the warm-season precipitation makes a predominant contribution to run-off variability, including interannual, quasi-decadal, and long-period fluctuations. It is shown that the difference between the temperature and humidity regimes of the 2000–2010 and (ETCW) is due to the considerable increase in precipitation, which can be attributed to the modern global warming. The estimates obtained using data of grid archives HadCRUT5, CRUts4, based on observation data, the quality and density of which changed within the 110-year period under consideration, is confirmed by the WFDE5 reanalysis data and estimates of the annual runoff by SWAP model.
