Abstract
When polluted groundwater flows in soils, some components are sorbed by the solid phase. A mathematical model of sorption incorporates the description of equilibrium between the mobile and sorbing phases (isotherm) and the kinetics of mass transport, which controls the tailing of the pollution front. In the case of nonlinear isotherms, the sorption and desorption are governed by different types of isotherms, resulting in histeresis effects or essential difference between the shapes of pollutant fronts. Moreover, the sorption has a damping effect, i.e., it smoothes concentration variations on the soil surface caused by seasonal variations and other factors.
