Abstract

The concentration of Cu and Zn was studied in the surface water layer in seven lakes in the Southern Urals (the east-piedmont limnological region). The investigated lakes are located meridionally at different distances from the Karabash Copper Plant, polluting the atmosphere with toxic substances and turning the adjacent areas into the zone of environmental disaster. Mathematical statistics methods were used to assess the contribution of heavy metal atmospheric emissions (in this case, of Cu and Zn) to the concentration of these metals in lake waters. The studies showed that, the distance from the source of emission is the most important factor determining the concentration of Cu in water bodies at least within 50 km from the plant.
