Abstract

Joint consideration of the gas flow dynamics in an arc chamber for fullerene production and fullerene assembly kinetics shows that the efficient fullerene annealing and the giant prevalence of magic fullerenes C60 and C70 are associated with the gas flow structure generated by the arc in the discharge chamber. Most nascent fullerenes are not immediately removed from the chamber; rather, they are entrained by closed gas flows. Analysis of fullerene annealing makes it possible to optimize fullerene production not only for arc parameters but also for chamber geometry.
