Abstract

It was studied how the duration of mechanochemical treatment (MCT) in water, ethanol, and air for 1–6 h affects the crystal structure and some physicochemical properties of a vanadium molybdenum oxide composite (V:Mo = 0.7:0.3). The obtained samples were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analyses; IR, Raman, and electron spectroscopy; nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and mercury porosimetry. It was found that MCT in air gives rise to a phase V2MoO8, whereas MCT in water for 3–6 h produces a previously unknown phase containing V4+. MCT in ethanol only changes the exposure of some crystal planes of V2O5 and MoO3. It is the last samples have the maximal photocatalytic activity in dye degradation in aqueous solutions.
