On the Finding of Talismania kotlyari (Alepocephalidae) in the Southeast Atlantic

Abstract

The morphological characteristics and distribution of the rare species Talismania kotlyari, known only from a few captures in the tropical Indian Ocean, have been specified. This species was recorded for the first time on the Walvis Ridge in the Southeast Atlantic. As the most probable way of penetration of the species into the Atlantic, one can assume the transfer with the rings of the Agulhas Retroflection, although its panoceanic distribution cannot be ruled out.

Notes

  1. Although the nominal species T. filamentosa Okamura et Kawanishi, 1984 and T. okinawensis Okamura et Kawanishi, 1984 are still considered valid (Fricke et al., 2023), the former is conspecific to T. longifilis, while the latter is conspecific to T. brachycephala (Sazonov, 1989).

  2. Unpublished manuscript by Yu.I. Sazonov on the slickheads of the continental slope of Australia, deposited in the IO RAS.

  3. In the manuscript of Yu.I. Sazonov, five more specimens are mentioned, caught between 20° and 25° S between Mozambique and Madagascar.

  4. Although there is no information in the literature about the captures of T. mekistonema in the Pacific Ocean, in the manuscript of Yu.I. Sazonov, this species was noted for the waters off New Caledonia.
