Dynamics of the water content and the concentrations of the ions of natrium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the gonads of mature roach Rutilus rutilus (Cyprinidae) during the reproduction cycle

Abstract

The concentrations of cations and the water remain stable in the gonads (stage II and IV) of males and females of roach Rutilus rutilus. Significant changes of these parameters take place during stage III, during the transition to stage V (functional maturation), and during the rehabilitation period after spawning (stage VI). In the ovaries at stage III, during vitellogenesis, significant decrease of the water content and potassium ions and increase of natrium, calcium, and magnesium are observed. Just before the spawning starts, during short-term stage V, the water content and natrium concentration increase in the oocytes; in the meantime, the concentrations of calcium and magnesium decrease. During the spermatogenesis (stage III), the natrium concentration in the spermary decreases, and the potassium concentration increases. During stage V, the opposite dynamics is observed, when the concentration of natrium increases greatly, and potassium decreases. The role of the ions in the fish reproduction is discussed.
