Taxonomic status of goby-like notothens of the genus Gobionotothen Balushkin (Nototheniidae) from the Kerguelen Plateau (Southern Ocean) and Jordan’s Rule

Abstract

The validity of Gobionotothen barsukovi, which comprises an adjacent sympatric pair of the littoral-dwelling G. acuta, has been proven by new materials. Issues concerning the clinal latitudinal variation of metameric structures (number of vertebrae, rays in the dorsal and anal fins) in the species of Gobionotothen have been discussed. The low level of panmixia and similar maximum size of populations (species) are considered as initial conditions for Jordan’s Rule.
