Ichthyofauna of seamounts around the island of ascension and St. Helena Island (Atlantic ocean)

Abstract

Bottom and near-bottom pelagic ichthyofauna associated with the seamounts around Ascension Island (Grattan Bank) and St. Helena Island (Bonaparte and Cardno seamountains) are considered. Brief descriptions of nine species including: Ophichthus regius (Ophichthyidae), Fistulaia petimba (Fistularidae), Scorpaena graftanica (Scorpaenidae), a new species Pontinus nigropunctatus (Scorpaenidae) that is most closely related to S. laevis (known from the tropical part of the Atlantic ocean), Serranus sanctahelenae (Serrannidae), Caranx lugubris (Carangidac), Prognathodes dichrous (Chaetodontidae), Ruvettus pretiosus (Gempylidae), and Chascanopsetta lugubris (Pleuronectidae) are provided.
