The First Find of Orbitolites (Foraminifera: Family Soritidae) in the Eocene of Armenia

Abstract

The Paleogene genus Orbitolites from the family Soritidae is found for the first time in Armenia, as well as on the territory of the former USSR. The association of representatives of this genus in the Upper Eocene of the Rind Section of Southern Armenia is dominated by the large species O. cotentinensis Lehmann. The genus Orbitolites and its three species from the Rind Horizon are systematically described. The assemblage of associated larger benthic foraminifera, also common in other sections of Armenia, made it possible to assign the Beds with Orbitolites to the SB18C subzone of the lower Upper Eocene. The distribution of numerous Orbitolites and miliolids indicates a back-reef lagoon setting, uncommon for the basins of the early Late Eocene of Southern Armenia.
