Abstract

Ammonites of a new genus, Kislovodskoceras gen. nov., with the type species K. kislovodskense sp. nov. (fam. Desmoceratidae), are described from the Middle Aptian of the vicinity of Kislovodsk. The shell shape and sutural ontogeny are discussed. Findings of the new taxon are confined to the middle part of the Epicheloniceras subnodosocostatum Zone, for which the position of the lower boundary in sections of the vicinity of Kislovodsk is revised.

Notes

  1. When characterizing and indexing the elements of the suture, the terminology presented by Mikhailova (1972, 1983) is used. Lobes: V—ventral, U—first umbilical, U1—second umbilical, I—internilateral, D—dorsal, S—sutural lobe (a series of lobes decreasing towards the umbilical seam and resulting from multiple alternate subdivisions of the internilateral lobe). The indices v and d are used as subscripts showing the division of the lobe, indicating the position of the new element (v—more external, d—more internal).

  2. Sharikadze (2015) interpreted the ontogenetic increase in sutural complexity differently, both in this species and in all representatives of Desmoceratidae. He argued that the lobes appearing in the seam part as a result of the second and subsequent divisions should in all cases be interpreted and indexed as formed from a saddle adjacent to lobe I on the external side. However, most authors believe that the appearance of new lobes in the seam zone in desmoceratids occurs through complete subdivision of only the internilateral lobe, as they are indexed by subscripts followed the index I (Mikhailova, 1983; Beznosov and Mikhailova, 1991).
