Abstract

A new radiolarian genus, Rhombastrum gen. nov., from carbonate-siliceous beds of the terminal Upper Cretaceous of the northwestern Rostov-on-Don Region (right bank of the Kalitva River) is described. This genus and its type species, R. russiense sp. nov. are distinguished by the development of a tholus in the wall of the skeleton. The terminology used in descriptions of new taxa is discussed. R. russiense sp. nov. is of great significance for stratification and correlation of Campanian-Maastrichtian deposits.
