Abstract
The effect of pH of a dispersed medium and electrolytes on the aggregative stability of yttrium oxohydroxide hydrosol obtained by the peptization method is studied. It is found that the sol under study is stable to coagulation in a narrow range of pH values, from 6.9 to 8.2. Upon introduction of nitrate and sulfate ions, hydrosol coagulation proceeds by different mechanisms. In the presence of sodium sulfate, irreversible coagulation of the sol takes place. It is shown that stability of the yttrium oxohydroxide hydrosol to coagulation is determined not only by the electrostatic factor but also by the availability of strongly hydrated gel layers on particles.
