Abstract

Reactions of transient species for a new photochromic system composed of perfluoro-2.2′-dinaphthyl disulfide ((SC10F7)2 = (SNF)2) and the planar complex di(mercaptoquinolinato)nickel(II) (Ni(SC9H6)2 = Ni(SR)2) in benzene solutions have been studied. Under UV irradiation, the disulfide dissociates yielding two sulfur-centered radicals (·SC10F7·SNF), which rapidly enter into the coordination sphere of the Ni(II) ion to give the radical complex (·SNF)Ni(SR)2. This species disappears in a second-order reaction yielding the dimer (RS)2Ni(RSSR)Ni(SR)2. The photochromic system returns to the initial state via dissociation of the dimer to the parent disulfide and two Ni(SR)2 molecules.
