Abstract

The characteristics of secular cycles are studied based on the reconstructed sunspot number series. It is established that the length of the observed cycles ranges widely from 50 to 160 years. Preferred values for the length of cycles, around 60, 90, and possibly 120 and 150 years, are selected. The length of ascending and descending branches is somewhat different. The steepness of the branches is measured by the slope of the tangent to respective branches and has the most probable values of ±0.5. It ranges from 0 to 2.5 for the ascending branch and from 0 to −2 for the descending branch and apparently depends on solar activity.
